Austin, TX – Rain may have delayed the start, but it didn’t dampen the spirit. On Saturday, April 5th, Greater East Austin Youth Association (GEAYA) Little League held its 2025 Spring Opening Day at historic Mabson Field—marking one of the most successful season openers in recent memory.
Despite the cold and blustery weather, players, coaches, families, and community members showed up in full force. GEAYA was the only league in its district to hit the field on Opening Day, and the energy was undeniable.
“This was our most successful Opening Day in years,” said Lee Dawson Jr., president of GEAYA Little League and vice president of GEAYA. “We played six full games with 12 teams—11 of them our own. Special thanks to the South Austin Optimist minors team for joining us at Mabson. Great games all around.”
The day kicked off with tee ball matchups:
Coach Pitch teams took over in the afternoon, followed by Minors and Majors games to close out the day.
“We had an amazing day,” said Emaan Abdelbaki, GEAYA board member and coach. “The kids had a blast, families were smiling, and yes, I got the famous BBQ Pork Chop sandwich. One of our new coaches even told me, ‘You all really know how to put on an Opening Day.’ I couldn’t agree more.”
In between games, Coach Nick Berard of Nick Berard Photo donated his time and talent, capturing action shots and team portraits. Parents can purchase digital files for $5 each, with 100% of proceeds benefiting GEAYA.
“Our goal is to capture the energy, talent, and joy these kids bring to the field,” said Coach Nick. A link to download photos will be sent to all families in the coming days.
Special thanks go to all GEAYA board members, team parents, and volunteers. From music and food to bounce houses and ballgames—Opening Day 2025 was a celebration of community, sportsmanship, and youth baseball.
